Disney and Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War opened to a stellar $14.9 million Wednesday as it rolled out in 15 foreign markets, placing No. 1 everywhere and coming in not far behind Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Civil War, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, could amass $200 million or more by Sunday, days before it launches in North America on May 6. It currently boasts a 98 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. (If that holds, it will be the best-reviewed Marvel film to date.)
The movie is rolling out in roughly 63 percent of the foreign marketplace this weekend. In South Korea ($4.3 million), the Philippines ($1.5 million) and Hong Kong ($1.1 million), Civil War scored the No. 3 opening of all time. And in France, it nabbed the top opening day of 2016 so far with $2.4 million.
Looking at other comps, Iron Man 3 debuted to $160 million offshore, while Captain America: The Winter Soldier took in $78 million.
