In an exclusive Parade interview and photo shoot with Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, the two actors talk about their kids, their 11 years of togetherness, their $150 wedding and the myths about being a power couple in Hollywood today. Sticky introduction. After an initial meeting at a friend’s dinner party, they later bumped into each other at an L.A. hockey game. Shepard asked if Bell had any gum. “Just this,” she said, pulling out the piece she was chewing. He took it, tore it in two and popped half into his mouth. Several days later, he tracked down her number, and they’ve been stuck together ever since.
Opposites attract. They “agree on almost nothing,” says Bell. When they met, “I believed the world was filled with sheep, and he believed the world was filled with wolves.” But both Detroit-area natives are “grown from the same seeds and watered with the same rain.”
It takes work. “This isn’t a special fairy tale,” she says about their relationship. He adds, “This is two people who worked really hard, and it’s attainable for you if you work really hard in your marriage too.”
Homebodies. Not big on date nights (“We’ve probably had nine in the last six years,” says Shepard), they much prefer to stay home and binge-watch something on TV, hang with friends or play with their two young daughters, ages 4 and 5. “We’re boring,” says Shepard, who has taken on podcasting (Armchair Expert) in addition to his TV and movie acting.
Marriage is messy. “We’re behind on our laundry, our house is a mess, there’s dog hair that we’re constantly trying to Swiffer,” says Bell, who’s gearing up for the reboot of Veronica Mars later this year on Hulu, and who’ll be reprising the voice of Princess Anna in Disney’s Frozen 2 in November. And kids just add to the clutter. “They leave stuff everywhere! It’s like they booby-trap the house, and sometimes they do booby-trap the house.” How well do Kristen and Dax really know each other?
