Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara has ranked as the highest-paid TV actress in the world for the sixth year running, with Forbes Magazine’s annual list declaring her earnings in the past year at just over $41 million.
While Vergara earns around $500,000 per episode of her show, and has worked on films in the last year including The Emoji Movie, the actress receives most of her earnings from endorsement deals. Along with being the spokesperson for Head & Shoulders, she is also the star of ads for Covergirl Cosmetics and has advertised for gyms, furniture collections, supermarkets and restaurants. She is also the face of a line of medical scrubs.
Vergara has earned in the past year nearly twice as much as her nearest rival, the Big Bang Theory actress Kaley Cuoco, who has increased her earnings by $2 million in the past year to a total of $26,500,000. That’s in spite of taking a $100,000 per episode pay cut, alongside her major Big Bang Theory costars, to ensure newer cast members Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik earned larger salaries.
Apart from Cuoco, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay and Vergara’s Modern Family costar Julie Bowen, earnings are down across the board, with actresses including Mindy Kaling and Ellen Pompeo earning around $2 million less than they did in 2016.
House of Cards star Robin Wright is the only newcomer to the top 10 list of earners, despite revealing earlier this year that she still has yet to receive pay parity with her costar Kevin Spacey.
“I don’t think I’m getting paid the same amount,” she told Rhapsody Magazine. “They told me I was getting a raise. But… I don’t think so. I really don’t like being duped. It’s such a male-dominant workforce still. There’s a conditioning. And changing the condition of men is what needs to happen.”
Actresses Stana Katic and Julianna Marguiles are the only stars to have been bumped from the Forbes top 10 in comparison to the 2016 list, most likely due to the end of their respective TV shows, Castle and The Good Wife.
Priyanka Chopra, who ranks eighth on the list with earnings of $10 million, will likely follow suit in Forbes’s 2018 list – her TV series Quantico was renewed by the skin of its teeth earlier this year, with Bollywood Life reporting that Chopra had to take a significant pay cut in order for the show to continue.
With the Shonda Rhimes soap Scandal ending this year, Kerry Washington will also likely depart next year’s list. Unlikely to be bumped any time soon? Pauley Perrette, one of the stars of the bizarrely long-running NCIS, which is about to enter its 15th season.
